A Tale of two chambers - Net Neutrality wise - 2018

We are now clear and fully aware of the intentions of the Republican Led Federal Communications Commission (FCC) which is based in the US. They have published the rule of reversing the long-standing laws of the Internet known as Net Neutrality.

This website has always been geared toward music culture and musicians along the lines of Soul, Jazz, and Funk music styles and combinations. However, this industry and many others ranging from scientific issues to the movie industry and beyond; will be changed forever if this rule is not fully restored. 

Just to remind you all out there that the FCC Rule would allow big companies to control and restrict how consumers access their favorite websites.

This could mean consumers have to pay more for them to access the Internet packages which at the moment they can access for free.

This is a reversal of the intended nature of the internet, whose inventors have cited and praised its openness and neutrality as one of the reasons for its success.

Such is the influence of the USA on the world. The fear is that the whole world could be influenced into following this same path.

However, the cause is not lost. Whenever an agency publishes a new rule within the Federal Register, it sets in motion a countdown clock of 60 legislative days for Congress to overturn it.

This could be the moment to truly save the Internet as we know it.

The Senate Democrats are proposing to undo the FCC rule through a process set up by the Congressional Review Act.

In fact - U.S. Sen. Ed Markey, D-Massachusetts, announced Tuesday (27^th February 2018) that Democrats have offered a formal resolution to restore "net neutrality" rules

Markey told reporters "When we take this vote on the Senate floor, every one of my colleagues will have to answer this question: Whose side are you on? Do you stand with hard-working American families for whom the internet is essential?" he said during a Capitol Hill news conference.

"Or do you stand with the big money, corporate interests, and their army of lobbyists? Do you stand with the teachers, students, innovators, medical professionals, and small businesses, or do you stand with the big broadband barons?"

"We are on the right side of history and we cannot give up now. The FCC should stand for 'fighting for consumers and competition.' Under Donald Trump, the FCC stands for 'forgetting consumers and competition,'" he said. "And today, we aren't just waging a months-long campaign, this is a revolution."

Unlike most legislation of this nature, which must be put on the floor by the majority party and often requires 60 votes in order to move forward.

A Congressional Review Act (CRA) can be passed with the support of just 51 senators. And any group of 30 of them can force the Senate to consider it.

CRA resolutions allow Congress to overturn regulatory actions at federal agencies with a simple majority vote in both chambers.

In accordance with the Congressional Review Act, the senators will formally introduce the resolution once the rule is submitted to both houses of Congress within the USA, and published in the federal register.

All 49 senators of the Democratic side are united in support of our CRA to stop the FCC from destroying the free and open internet.

They now have the backing of Senator Susan Collins, a Republican from Maine, who has pledged to vote and support the Act.

The movement just needs just one more vote to ensure the internet remains free and accessible to all within the USA.

That vote must come from the ranks of the Republicans, who so far have sided with internet service providers and the repeal of the Net neutrality rules.

The more control these Internet Service Providers (ISPs) have over internet access, the more they can maximize their profits at the expense of regular consumers by charging virtual tolls, with the highest bidders cruising along private fast lanes while the rest of us inch along a single, traffic-choked public lane.

This FCC’s new rule isn’t going to make the country (USA) any more competitive or prosperous.

In fact, it may make us less competitive by lining the pockets of a handful of ISPs, who will use their new profits to buy back stock and boost dividends for their investors (just as so many other corporations have done in the wake of the Republican tax bill).

The contrast between the two parties on this issue couldn’t be clearer.

It is the Democrats who are fighting for consumers and working people struggling to pay their bills. While Republicans are mainly fighting for their campaign donors, the big corporations.

The Democrats believe that the future of the internet must be as free and open as its past. This means that small business startups that may be still living with their parents can compete with the world’s largest corporations.

A young student in an underfunded school district can find the information he or she needs online, and every American can continue to affordably and easily take advantage of this vital service.

The step towards making this vision a reality is the passing of the Senate Democrats’ CRA.

I urge the people of the USA (or within your own relative countries – keep an eye on what is going on - who’s reading this) to contact their Senate Republicans (Or government officials) who have not yet pledged to vote for it.

I myself am looking at this as a music lover, musician, and for the music industry overall.

However, I believe this has become even more important than the music industry. It is the general freedom of using the Internet that is at stake here. Where ever you are based within the world, that is what is up for grabs.
